South African enterprise development and SME investment specialist Edge Growth has reached a R350 million (US$21.9 million) first close on Edge Impact Fund. The growth-stage impact fund will provide catalytic debt and hybrid capital to established, technology-enabled scale-ups in South Africa and selected African markets.

The vehicle is managed by Edge Growth Ventures, Edge Growth's impact investing division. Edge Growth said the mandate is focused on South Africa, with openness to Kenya and the broader East Africa region.

Edge Impact Fund is aimed at companies typically at Series A to C that have a proven model, predictable recurring cash flows and at least R20 million in annual revenue. Cheques will run from R20 million to R60 million.

The fund will use term loans, working capital finance, venture debt, convertible loans and revenue based financing, and is focused on fintech, health tech, education and green technology. Catalytic debt is structured around cash flow, to support growth, complement equity and unlock further funding for businesses that are not yet a natural fit for traditional bank debt.

Edge Growth said the capital can be used to extend runway with limited dilution, fund working capital or expansion, or bridge to a later equity round.

The first close is anchored by two unnamed local financial institutions. Janice Johnston, Chief Executive of Edge Growth Ventures, said the firm is moving from funds backed mainly by corporate enterprise and supplier development programmes to attracting institutional investors.

Noluvo Nela, Partner and Fund Head at Edge Growth Ventures, will head the fund. She described the capital as "fit-for-purpose" funding for high-potential enterprises.

Edge Growth said it launched South Africa's first dedicated venture debt fund in 2022. The firm manages more than R2 billion in SME funds and has deployed almost R1.5 billion.

Edge Impact Fund was founded in 2026 after more than three years of development. It is targeting a R750 million final close by December 2027.
