The European Investment Bank, in partnership with the European Commission, has provided a €15 million venture loan to VaxThera, the first tranche of an approved €35 million financing package for the Colombian biotechnology company.

The facility will support construction, fitting out and validation of the second phase of VaxThera’s commercial-scale site for vaccines and biological medicines. Proceeds will also fund technology transfer and R&D programmes addressing areas of high unmet medical need.

VaxThera is developing, manufacturing and commercialising vaccines and biopharmaceutical products. The company, legally VaxThera S.A.S. and led by chief executive Professor Jorge Emilio Osorio, is building domestic and regional capacity in Colombia for advanced biological production.

The integrated manufacturing facility is designed to produce up to 250 million doses a year of liquid and lyophilised biologicals, rising to 600 million to 700 million doses in pandemic mode. Its planned capabilities include upstream processing and precision filling, supporting both VaxThera’s own vaccines, subject to regulatory approval, and contract development and manufacturing services.

The financing is backed by the European Commission through Global Gateway and supported by the EFSD+ Accelerating Human Development, or HDX, guarantee. Under HDX, the EIB invests through instruments including corporate loans, venture loans and volume or procurement guarantees, alongside new health investments and grants from the Gates Foundation.

VaxThera will also receive a complementary €1.5 million technical assistance grant under HDX for three vaccine candidates in its R&D portfolio.

The EIB project sheet for VAXTHERA INFECTIOUS DISEASES (HDX), approved in December 2025, listed proposed EIB finance of around €35 million and total project cost of about €108 million.
